Transition to School 

Starting school is a major transition for children and their families. It is a period of change that can be both challenging and exciting. The kindergarten will participate and facilitate activities to help with transition to school and Kindergarten Teachers will write Transition Learning and Development Statement for each child who will be moving on to school. Parents are an important part of the development of this Statement and are asked to contribute by completing some information on their child and giving permission for the statement to be passed on to the school.


The importance of transition…

  • Starting school is a big step for you and your child.
  • Your child’s first school experiences shape their interest in learning.
  • A positive transition to school can improve your child’s attitude to school and their achievements – socially and academically.

Tips to support your child

  • School enrolments start from May
    • Early enrolment gives you and your child plenty of time to get to know your child’s teacher and together plan to support your child’s positive start to school.
  • Participate in transition-to-school programs
    • These help you and your child get a better understanding of what school will be like.
    • CPSG kindergartens organise their own transition-to-school programs, so please contact your school or kindergarten teacher for more details.
  • Contribute to the Transition Learning and Development Statement in October/November

Outline of the Victorian Transition Approach

1. Early Childhood Educators establish positive relationships between children, families and educators

2. Early Childhood Educators facilitate each child’s development as a capable learner

3. Early Childhood Educators differentiate between ‘orientation to school’ and ‘transition-to-school’ programs. Activity B

4. Options for, and evaluations of, transition program activities and events discussed between local early childhood settings, Outside School Hours Care providers and schools.

5. School enrolment commences. (Families lodge enrolment form with school). From May

6. Transition planning commences – children and their families participate in their local transition program. Note: Activities and events may start from July onwards

7. Early childhood educators commences processes to complete Transition

Learning and Development Statement, including engaging families and Children in October

8. Early childhood educator collates final information, and obtains consent from parents/guardians to forward information to school. (This process may involve face-to-face meetings, or similar alternative, with families and the Prep teacher.)

9. Final copy of Transition Learning and Development Statement forwarded to family, Prep Teacher and Outside School Hours Care contact (where appropriate) through agreed method (in person, mail, email, etc.) in November

10. Prep teacher** reviews information in Transition Learning and Development Statement, and uses to inform curriculum planning.* Where appropriate, Prep teacher meets with families and early childhood educator to discuss 


Transition Learning and Development Statement and identify additional transition program activities that may be required.

11. Additional on-entry Prep assessments of learning commence. March onwards

Note:* It is recognised that in many areas transition planning may commence prior to the dates provided, particularly for children with additional needs


Transition Learning and Development Statement
  • Helps the sharing of information between you, your child’s early childhood service and the school
  • Summarises your child’s strengths, interests and identifies how your child’s learning and development can be supported
  • Has 2 parts – one for you to complete and one for your child’s early childhood educator to complete

Why is it important to share this information with the school?

It will help your child to:

  • tell their Prep teacher what is important to them and what they think about starting school
  • It will help you to:
  • tell the school and Prep teacher important things about your child and your family
  • identify things that will help your child transition to school
  • become more involved with your child’s transition to school
  • It will help the Prep teacher to:
  • get a better understanding of your child and your family
  • plan learning and teaching programs for your child
  • plan additional support for your child
